USDOT Biennial Update: Maintaining Your FMCSA Registration
Is your VMT outdated? US Compliance Services can get you back on the road. USDOT Biennial Updates are not only important; they are required by law. The FMCSA requires companies to update their USDOT information every two years. If they fail to comply, companies risk getting fined or losing their authority to operate.
What Is a USDOT Biennial Update?
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration requires all entities under its jurisdiction to update their information every two years (biennially). Carriers must file their biennial update even if their company information has not changed, or if they have ceased interstate operations since their last update.
Some of the information included on a biennial update includes:
1. The name of the company.
2. The location of the company doing registration.
3. Registration information about operating procedures.
4. The number of vehicles in the fleet.
5. The number of drivers in the fleet.
6. Some other FMCSA biennial update registration information.
The process of filing and maintaining a biennial update can be overwhelming and confusing for motor carriers to navigate; that is why US Compliance Services offers a streamlined service to motor carriers. We will collect your pertinent information and file your biennial update on your behalf, giving you the peace of mind and freedom to focus on your company's operations.
Do I Need to Update My USDOT Number?
Absolutely. Outdated VMT notifications are the equivalent of a cease and desist notice in the trucking industry. Trucking businesses must update the information associated with their DOT numbers every two years. That's the reason that it's called a "biennial" update. The sides of all trucks and registered motor carriers must display an assigned DOT (Department of Transportation) number. That number must updated on a biennial basis through a registration process with the FMCSA. Failure of registration can result in massive fines and penalties, as well as loss of your authority.

EXPEDITED BIENNIAL UPDATE FILING
WHEN IS THE DEADLINE TO FILE?
DETERMINING YOUR FILING MONTH
Each motor carrier or Intermodal Equipment Provider must file the appropriate form at the following times:
- Before it begins operations (DOT Application)
- Every 2 years according to the following schedule
USDOT Number Ending In | Must File By Last Day Of: |
---|---|
1 | January |
2 | February |
3 | March |
4 | April |
5 | May |
6 | June |
7 | July |
8 | August |
9 | September |
0 | October |
DETERMINING YOUR FILING YEAR
Don't wait for an outdated VMT. To determine a carrier's biennial update filing year, reference the second to last digit in their USDOT Number:
- If that number is odd, the Carrier or IEP shall file the update before the last day of their scheduled month on every odd year (2021, 2023, 2025, etc.)
- If that number is even, the Carrier or IEP shall file the update before the last day of their scheduled month on every even year (2022, 2024, 2026, etc.)
